Architectural Roofing Shingles
Architectural shingles are also known as laminated or dimensional shingles. They are among the highest quality roofing products as they are constructed with a heavier base mat in which multiple layers of material are adhered to. This gives the “dimensional” shingles a layered or three-dimensional look. Whereas the standard three-tab shingle contains a flat layer with no dimensional “thickness” to it. Typically architectural shingles weight almost 50% more than the standard 3 tab shingles.
Dimensional shingles were developed in the 1970’s for the high-end housing market. Homeowners were looking for an asphalt shingle product that had the architectural appearance of cedar shingles while providing the performance of asphalt. By using the layered construction of the dimensional shingle it appears to have the texture similar to cedar shakes. Architectural shingles do a much better job hiding imperfections in the roofing structure as well. It’s likely that in the coming years standard three-tab shingles will begin to fade away in the market as demand for architectural shingles increases. Some homeowner’s associations require this type of shingle as well.
Class 4 Shingles
Class 4 IR shingles featuring Scotchgard™ Protector incorporate a rubberized SBS polymer that creates a more durable and longer lasting shingle that can withstand extreme weather conditions. SBS (Styrene Butadiene Styrene) asphalt construction ensures high performance and lasting durability. This superior shingle can be used in all areas of the country and has proven its stability in high impact and strong winds.
To get a better idea of their stability, it’s good to know that shingles are ranked into four classes based on their strength and overall durability. Class 1 is the least durable and Class 4 is the most resistant to damage. With this clarification, homeowners can have peace of mind as all Class 4 IR shingles i uphold the highest standards when it comes to protecting a home. Keep in mind, Class 4 shingles are not only important from a protection standpoint, impact resistant shingles also lend their value to curb appeal by preserving the integrity of the roof’s looks as well.
Residential Metal Roofing
Metal roofs are favored for their fire-resistant qualities and longevity. They are also surprisingly lightweight and are great at reflecting heat from the sun, a characteristic that helps homeowners save energy on cooling bills and may even qualify for tax credits.
Metal roofing materials are made primarily from aluminum and steel, but other materials, such as copper and alloys, are also used but can be very expensive.
Steel and aluminum are by far the most common and sensible of available roofing materials because they are economical, hold paint finishes well (steel can be galvanized), and are durable. Aluminum is a relatively soft metal, so it is more prone to denting and damage and it is also more expensive than steel. On the flip side, aluminum won’t corrode the way steel can if the finish is compromised.
Performance Difference
Architectural shingles typically have a minimum of 25 to 30-year warranties. Because of the heavier construction, they are less likely to warp and they provide much better wind resistance. Standard three-tab shingles are typically rated for 60 mph winds while most architectural shingles are rated for 80 mph up to 120 mph.
Cost Difference
Today architectural shingles are available in many different warranty lengths from 25 to 50 years. Typically, the cost of architectural shingles is only about 20% more than the traditional 3 tab shingles. Some of the higher end 50-year products can be as much as twice as expensive to buy. One thing to consider though is the increased value of your home. Architectural shingles raise the curb appeal of a home and make it more valuable in an appraisal.
We also offer roofing maintenance and repair services. We can keep your roof in tip-top shape, thus reducing your chances of having more costly repairs down the line.
